Folic acid (vitamin B9) or folate is one of the essential nutrients in the growth and development of the child. Even before birth, the baby has to benefit from it, and after birth it must be fully supplied to the baby, especially by feeding.

Benefits of folic acid in children

Symptoms of folic acid deficiency in children

This nutrient must be part of your little one's daily menu, but there are also cases in which even the little ones suffer from this acid deficiency. Symptoms include:

  • weight loss;

  • inflammation of the tongue;

  • diarrhea;

  • belly pains;

  • symptoms of anemia etc.

However, these symptoms may also occur for other reasons. It does not mean that if a child has diarrhea and belly pain has a folic acid deficiency. It is best to go to the doctor for further analysis if you suspect such a deficiency or if you know that you do not consume many foods that contain the nutrient or do not administer it in any way.

Recommended daily dose of folic acid in children

  • 1-3 years - 150 mg / day;
  • 4-8 years - 200 mg / day;
  • 9-13 years - 300 mg / day.

Foods that contain folic acid

It is not kept very long in the body of the little ones, therefore its administration must be done daily. The most indicated source from which the little ones can get their folic acid or folate is their diet.

The richest foods in this nutrient remain green vegetables, dark in color. In particular, spinach is indicated to cover folate deficiency or to supplement it. But green beans, broccoli, asparagus, lentil or peas are equally useful.

Carrots are a vegetable rich in folic acid that must be introduced since the diversification of nutrition in the child's menu.

Grains fortified with folic acid are a useful source, but it is important to read the label and see if they have this nutrient or not, because not all contain it.

Besides being the most important source of protein, eggs also bring a substantial contribution of folate into the body of the young through yellow. The liver of the bird also contains the vitamin B9 necessary to raise the baby.

And almonds, chestnuts or corn or whole wheat can be introduced in the small menu as important sources of this acid.

Milk and some types of cheese also contain folic acid. Attention, except the goat, which contains very small traces. Do not rely on goat milk to ensure the recommended daily dose of this acid.
