Australian researchers at the Australian Institute of Sport have come to the conclusion that a cup of coffee helps consume one third of calories during exercise. Studies have shown that, under the influence of caffeine, muscles begin to use body fat as an energy source instead of carbohydrate sugars.
The researchers tested the effects of caffeine on cyclists, some of them being allowed to drink a cup of coffee while pedaling. Those who drank coffee continued the exercise longer than those who drank water. Doctors warn that ingesting caffeine before physical exertion does not lead to fat burning.
Caffeine consumption during exercise is however the optimal solution, giving the possibility of prolonging it.
