Allergic reactions of the body are nothing more than attempts by the immune system to protect us from harmful environmental or food factors. Our body acts through rejection reactions whenever it is threatened by such substances, and the reactions may vary from case to case and from one allergen to another.
The most common allergies are contact, such as allergic rhinitis or allergic conjunctivitis, caused in most cases by the tiny factors in the environment, such as dust particles or those of pollen. Besides, allergies to certain foods are also quite common.
Dairy products containing lactose and pbakery products or pastry containing gluten most often causes allergies, but among the common allergens are some seeds or oleaginous, fruits and vegetables or spices for culinary preparations.
Symptoms of food allergies
First of all, you should know that most food allergies are manifested by the age of 4, because their immune system is not yet mature by this age.
They manifest immediately after the absorption of an allergen, that is to say within two hours of ingesting it. Symptoms can be cutaneous, these manifesting through:
- Red stains;
- inflammation and itching in the skin;
- swelling of the face or limbs may also occur in more severe cases;
the sensation of suffocation is also quite common, due to inflammation of the esophagus, which can occur shortly after ingestion of preparations containing allergens;
- intestinal cramps and soft seat;
- decrease of the pulse;
- the patient's fainting or pallor.
Children suffering from conditions such as asthma, hives or baby eczema are prone to food allergies. The hereditary factor is also important, so if you and the other parent of the child are suffering from food allergies, it is very likely that your descendants will suffer because of them.
The diagnosis of food allergies is made by 3 methods:
- skin test;
- blood tests;
- provocation tests.
The first method is least invasive, and children tolerate it best, but doctors do not recommend it when there is a risk of anaphylactic shock.
Blood testing is more painful, but it does not endanger the health of small patients. The provocative tests are recommended only in the case of mild allergies and consist of ingesting those foods with harmful potential which are supposed to have caused allergic reactions, under the careful observation of the doctor.
Treatments and remedies for food allergies in children
Food allergies manifest themselves before the age of 4, when the immune and digestive systems of children are not fully matured. Unfortunately, there are no drug treatments for these allergies, and the only way to prevent the onset of symptoms is to avoid allergen-containing foods.
Foods that cause allergies can be:
- dairy products of animal origin;
- hazelnuts or walnuts;
- certain fruits and vegetables that contain seeds such as: strawberries, gluten-containing cereal products and seafood.
Symptoms are imminent upon ingestion, and in very severe cases they may degenerate into anaphylaxis. In some cases, food additives such as sulphites or salicylics or tartrazine may be the ingredients that cause an allergic crisis, the reactions being more common in children suffering from forms of asthma.
Anaphylactic shock it is the most serious form of allergies, and in the case of food allergies it happens in one of 3 cases. This is manifested by the sudden drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness, and in cases where it is not treated immediately it can lead to death.
